Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... Armstrong Family of Windham, N. H (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Armstrong Family of Windham, N. H The great and wide-spread Scottish family of Armstrong derives its surname from the following circumstance: An ancient king of Scotland, having his horse killed under him in battle, was immediately remounted by Fairbairn, his armor-bearer. For this timely assistance the king amply rewarded him with lands on the borders, and to perpetuate the memory of so important a service, as well as the manner in which it was performed (for Fairbairn took the king by the thigh, and set him on his saddle), his royal master gave him the appellation of Armstrong, and assigned him for crest, an armed hand and arm; in the left hand a leg and foot in armor, couped at the thigh all proper. In 1726, Robert Armstrong, of Portsmouth, deeded land in Londonderry to James Boyd and others. 1. Robert Armstrong was one of the original proprietors of Londonderry, on June 21, 1722. There was a "home lot and 2d division" laid out to him Dec. 21, 1722, and in the charter of the town it was provided, "That the Proprietors of each share shall build a dwelling-house within three years and settle a family therein." The fact that he owned this land after the three years would imply that the conditions were fulfilled. Aug. 1, 1726, there was one acre of land in "Flat Rock Meadow" laid out to him. Excerpt from Complimentary Dinner to Stephen N. Gifford Esq., Clerk of the Massachusetts Senate: In Honor of His Twenty-Five Years' Service in That Capacity, Given by the Members of the Senate During That Period, at the United States Hotel, Boston, March 10, 1882 Dr. Johnson says, When there are a great many people, they come out Of church slowly: when there are a few, they come out easily. SO it is with ideas. When there is much crowding the mind, it is difficult to express it. I trust I shall not be slow; but, if you find a confusion Of ideas, you must attribute it to the multiplicity of topics which crowd upon me. Contested Election in California Vs, Hon. C. N. Felton Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from A Contested Election in California Vs, Hon. C. N. Felton: Testimony of the Qualified Electors and Legal Voters of New Almaden At the general election held in California, November 2nd, 1886, Hon. Charles N. Felton and Frank J.Sullivan were rival candidates for election as members of Congress in the Fifth Congressional District. The official returns gave to Hon. Charles N. Felton a plurality of 118 votes, and the certificate of election duly issued to him. Sullivan afterwards inaugurated a contest for the seat. In this contest the vote of New Almaden precinct became a very conspicuous part. The majority against Sullivan in that precinct was 164, so that if Sullivan could have that precinct thrown out, or the votes cast for Mr. Felton counted for Mr. Sullivan, he might reasonably expect to unseat Mr. Felton and fill the place himself. The New Almaden precinct is the seat of the great New Almaden Quicksilver Mine, which for many years has been the principal quicksilver producer of the American Continent, and employs about 500 men in all capacities, of whom 156 were voters, and voted at the election in 1886. The total vote of the precinct was 256. The grounds of the attack upon the vote of New Almaden precinct by Sullivan were, that the voters of the precinct were coerced, intimidated, and held in a state of peonage or slavery and compelled to vote for Mr. Felton against their will. In support of this he attacked the method of conducting the mine, the system of trade at the mine, and the general condition of the miners; claiming that those who did not vote as pleased the management of the mine would be discharged. On behalf of Sullivan the testimony relating to Almaden was almost entirely hearsay so far as it could be in any sense pertinent to the issue; being generally a statement by witnesses that they had heard, or "it was generally understood" that so and so had happened at Almaden. On behalf of Mr. Felton a large amount of evidence was taken, very much of it at New Almaden. Of the 256 persons who had voted in that precinct in 1886, 243 were personally examined, the other 13 being dead or having removed to a distance, or for other reasons their attendance as witnesses being impracticable. Of the number examined there was not one but what testified in the clearest terms, that for more, than fifteen years past the subject of voting, or candidates, or elections had never been mentioned to any employee of the Company by any one in any way connected with the management of the mine; that the Superintendent of the mine was the only person in the precinct who voted the American ticket in 1886. That the voting employees of the mine consist very largely of natives of Mexico and Cornwall, England, who here, as elsewhere in California,, vote the Republican ticket almost exclusively. Proceedings of the Convention of Druggist, Held in Raleigh, N. C., August 11, 1880 Forgotten Books

Excerpt from Proceedings of the Convention of Druggist, Held in Raleigh, N. C., August 11, 1880: Proceedings of the North Carolina Pharmaceutical Association, First Annual Meeting Raleigh, Aug; 11th and 12th, 1880; Also Constitution and by-Laws, Roll of Members, &C The Druggists from all parts of the State, from the Mountains to the Sea-Shore responded promptly and heartily to this proposition, a majority favoring Raleigh as the place of meeting. Finding such unanimity of feeling, these gentlemen, with the consent and by the authority of nearly one hundred Druggists of this State, issued a call for the convention to be held in the city of Raleigh, August 11th, the detailed arrangements being made almost entirely by the individual efforts of Mr. E. M. Nadal, of Wilson. When we consider the large number of Druggists in North Carolina and the short notice given - not quite three months - the successful and harmonious organization of so large an Association stands without a parallel in the past, and places it numerically alongside of others which have been several years in existence. A record of these facts is so closely allied to the duties of the Secretary that he has thought best to place them here as a Preface to our Book of Proceedings. The list of members has been made as complete as possible, and represents paid up members only. Any failure to print the name of a member will be entirely unintentional, and we trust has not occurred. On behalf of the Association, the Secretary expresses their hearty appreciation of the many acts of kindness shown the members by the Pharmaceutical fraternity and numerous citizens of Raleigh. One of our most pleasant recollections is the visit to the State Lunatic Asylum where we were so cordially received by Dr. Eugene Grissom, Superintendent of the Institution. The Secretary alludes to these matters, believing that they should be recorded in our publication, as an evidence of our appreciation of the efforts of the Druggists of Raleigh to render our sojourn with them a pleasure, as well as a matter of business. This report of proceedings is sent to a large number of Druggists who are not yet members, with the hope that they may join our Association at our next Annual Meeting. We urge the Druggists of this State to unite with us in our efforts to advance the interests of our Profession as Pharmacists. A blank form of application for membership, will be found at the end of this pamphlet, which may be filled out and forwarded to any member of the Executive Committee. Excerpt from Annual Reports of the Town Officers of Chesterfield, N. H: For the Year Ending February 15, 1897 We think we are warranted in saying the schools, the past year, have been more than ordinarily successful; The teachers have, as a rule, been earnest, thorough workers, devoting their whole time and energy to the benefit of their pupils. In a few cases, too much outside work has been attempted by teachers and pupils, keeping them out late at night, and bringing them to their duties jaded and worn. We believe in an abundance of sleep for brain workers, and teachers should not by example encourage the keeping of late hours. Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Design of a Hollow Dam and Hydro Electric Plant at French's Mills, N. Y: A Thesis In the selection and preparation of this thesis, the authors have sought to secure one which would involve the solution of as many different problems as possible: the idea has been not so much to plan, in general, some large water power development, but to work out in detail the problems connected with a small installation and to make a complete set of construction drawings for it. No attempt has been made to design any of the electrical or hydraulic equipment of the plant as this would present a very large problem in itself, but these have been selected with care and reference to their fitness for the work which they are to do. The factors entering into the choice of all such equipment, however, and the reasons for the selection made will be included in this work.
