?I spend all my money on books?, wrote Johannes Brahms at the age of 20; ?Since boyhood I have read anything I could get my hands on and, without any guidance, I found my way from the worst towards the best?. Whilst his choice of poetry for his ?Lieder? range from the sentimental to the exquisite, the texts of his choral works are of an almost consistently high literary standard, and the music resounds throughout with the composer?s loving devotion to the words therein. He described the Marienlieder of 1859 as being ?in the style of old German church music and folk song? Unlike the Marienlieder, most of Brahms?s choral works with orchestra take their texts either from the Bible or from the great German poets of the high Romantic era. Of the works, presented on this album, the Alto Rhapsody is surely the most autobiographical. The Rhapsody is a setting of three stanzas from Goethe?s poem ?Harzreise im Winter?.Combined with the Schicksalslied and Nänie, this makes an excellent display of Brahms choral works.

Shostakovich: Choral Music Brilliant Classics

Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna

These choruses are not (or not entirely) the tub-thumping exercises in blatant jingoistic rabble-rousing that you might expect, but contain many moments of poetry that make them secular rivals to earlier works by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov which draw from Russia's great Orthodox tradition of choral music. In Stalin's Russia such an option was closed to Shostakovich, of course, even had he wished to explore it, but instead he used the poetry of Revolutionary leaders and imbued it both with his own, bitter-sweet harmonic vocabulary while never losing sight of the powerful character of Russian choruses for whom he would be writing. One such, Moscow-based, performs the two cycles on this recording, and they naturally have the idiom, and language, under their skins.Other information:- Only available recording as a single issue of these works.- As an "obedient" Soviet artist, Shostakovich set texts of revolutionary poets to music. The result is vintage Shostakovich: under the blatant populist message of the text we hear a melancholy and tender heart. The choral arrangements of Russian Folk Songs derive inspiration from the rich Russian folk culture, and Russian Orthodox Chant (though of course in a hidden way, as it was forbidden by the authorities).- Excellent performances by Russian forces.

Tu kobiecie odbiera się godność, a nawet życie zgodnie z odwiecznym obyczajem i uświęconą tradycją. A śmierć jest karą dla dziewczyny, która zhańbi rodzinę. Tak jak Souad. Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... SOUAD przeżyła - cudem, ale rodzina usiłowała zabić ją nawet w szpitalu. Na zawsze jednak pozostanie straszliwie okaleczona - na ciele i duszy. I wciąż musi się ukrywać; dopóki żyje, jej rodzinę okrywa hańba. CABANILLES: MORTALES QUE AMAIS, COMPLETE VOCAL MUSIC Brilliant Classics

Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna

Hailed in his time as Spain?s greatest living composer, Joan Baptista Cabanilles is today considered by many to be the greatest of all Spanish Baroque composers, one whose wealth of ideas, mastery of counterpoint and command of form represent the climax of the Iberian tradition of organ music that stretched as far back as Cabezón. That Cabanilles was held in high esteem by his contemporaries is shown by his music?s wide distribution in manuscripts. Though the vast majority is for keyboard, there do exist some 10 sacred choral works ? precious remnants of what must have been a much larger repertory, probably conceived for the cathedral of Valencia in which the composer spent most of his working life. All of the works are assembled on this charming release, recorded by the chamber choir and musicological society Amystis, and a significant addition the Spanish Baroque discography that follows the completion of the critical edition by José Duce Chenoll of Cabanilles? entire vocal music output. Chenoll, who directs and provides the intonation, postulates in the liner notes that not all of the compositions ? which include a Mass and Magnificat as well as works honouring the Blessed Sacrament ? were performed in Cabanilles? lifetime, given that many are written on sketch paper (and possibly, too, in the composer?s hand), but this should not detract from their masterful quality. Revealing the composer?s great expertise in the use of musical rhetoric as well as his concern regarding varied rhythmic and harmonic effects, they are performed with aplomb by an ensemble that have made it their special task to research and promote, always via novel means, unpublished repertoire from the late 16th to early 18th centuries.Other information:- Recorded June & October 2012, El Puig de Santa Maria Royal Monastery, Valencia, Spain.- Juan Cabanilles (1644-1712) was one of the most important Spanish Baroque composers. He served for 45 years as Maestro di Cappella and organist of the Cathedral of Valencia. He wrote a substantial oeuvre for keyboard (organ and harpsichord), and a fine body of choral works, of which this new issue presents the first complete recording.- Cabanilles? choral works are grand scale, virtuoso and festive, composed for filling the vast spaces of the Valencia Cathedral.- Beautifully sung by the Coro Amystis, who did extensive research into the works of this neglected Spanish composer.-An important release, a valuable discovery of a treasure from the Spanish Baroque!

Zelenka: Missa Dei Patris, Psalms, Capriccio's Brilliant Classics

"Zelenka was one of Bach's and Telemann's most musically colourful contemporaries." (Gramophone)Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679--1745) is one of the most enigmatic figures in the history of Baroque music. Very little is known of his early years, where he studied and who taught him. Born in a village to the south of Prague, he later travelled to Dresden where he joined the court of the Elector of Saxony, Friedrich August I. His position at the court was a lowly one, but he nonetheless composed many works there and his output of church music was particularly prolific.Zelenka was an astonishingly original and forward-looking composer, and his late Masses such as the Missa Dei Patris are a real departure from what we might see as 'typical' Baroque choral music, showing the influence of Italian opera and elements of the emerging style galant. Written for small forces but nevertheless conceived on a large scale, the Missa Dei Patris is full of beautiful melodies and profoundly expressive choral writing, and characterised by a unique blend of melancholy and ecstatic fervour. The second disc in this set includes three of Zelenka's virtuosic and formally innovative Capriccios, and two of the Psalm settings that he composed for Vesper services at the Dresden court. The works are heard here in definitive performances featuring renowned singers such as René Jacobs, Peter Schreier and Olaf Bär and the Virtuosi Saxoniae -- an ensemble comprising some of the finest musicians from the Dresden Staatskapelle -- under the baton of their founder, Ludwig Güttler.Other information:- Recorded between 1986 and 1994 at the Lukaskirche in Dresden.- The works of Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679-1745) are gaining rapidly in public recognition and admiration. His works, especially his later choral compositions, are so startlingly original, personal and full of emotional expression, that he is sometimes called The Bohemian Bach.- This 2-CD set contains three large-scale sacred works and three Capriccios, instrumental suites of great virtuosity and brilliance.- Beautiful performances by the early music band Virtuosi Saxoniae conducted by Ludwig Güttler, and famous soloists René Jacobs, Olaf Bär and Peter Schreier.- Contains booklet notes and sung texts with English translations.

Schubert: Lazarus Brilliant Classics

Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna

As with many of the works composed during the same period, Schubert's Lazarus -- essentially a sacred stage work rather than an oratorio -- remains unfinished, with Act 2's burial never completed and the music for Act 3's resurrection never begun. Perhaps Schubert felt unable to continue due to his religious views; perhaps his rapidly developing style simply caused him to lose patience with the work, which it would appear was not written to commission. Whatever the reason, there is little doubt that the work remains one of the composer's most forward-thinking and innovative -- and therein lies the real miracle of the piece. In terms of musical profundity and individuality, Lazarus may be thought of as the dramatic vocal counterpart of the 'Unfinished' Symphony. What makes the work stand out is its formal and instrumentation-based novelties -- gone is the separation of recitative and aria still adhered to by Beethoven, for example -- as well as an unprecedented treatment of the text -- Jairus's daughter's description of her death and return to earthly life, for instance, surpasses anything in Schubert's songs with regard to expression of words in music. Written during the political setbacks of the Restoration, Lazarus represents Schubert's first attempt to escape from a world that becoming increasingly out of joint. The composer, like so many of his fellow artists, sought refuge in Romantic forms of religious utopianism, and this quality also comes to the fore in 'Unfinished' and his A flat major Mass, works that also date from the middle period of Schubert's life.It is an astonishing paradox that Schubert, whose operas failed so completely, should emerge in this unfinished work as the unnoticed pioneer of music drama. Considered years ahead of its time, Lazarus is here performed by an all-German cast featuring the esteemed choral conductor Dietrich Knothe -- who made a name for himself recording unknown or forgotten music of the great Romantics.Other information:- Recorded in 1978 at the Christuskirche in Berlin.- Contains detailed notes on the composer and his music.Schubert's oratorio Lazarus is unfinished (part of the 2nd and the complete 3rd act are missing), and that may account for its relative obscurity. A great shame, as Lazarus is one of Schubert's most original and forward looking dramatic works. It contains music of great beauty and power, its structure highly innovative, as it is one continuous dramatic development without the distinction between recitative and aria.- A most welcome reissue from the Berlin Classics catalogue of this neglected masterwork, featuring a superb all German cast, with the great Eberhard Büchner and Ingeborg Springer. The famous Berliner Singakademie and the Staatskapelle Berlin are conducted by choral specialist Dietrich Knothe.Booklet contains extensive liner notes.

Schutz: Sacred Music Brilliant Classics

Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna

"Seculi sui Musicus excellentissimus" was the epitaph inscribed on his tombstone in the old Frauenkirche of Dresden -- to his contemporaries, the Saxon-born Heinrich Schütz was one of the most outstanding composers of the century, and even writers of music history today refer to him as 'Musicus poeticus ecclesiasticus', whose works were and are still the epitome of Protestant church music. This collection is a tribute to the great Baroque composer, who received most of his training in Venice from the organist of St Mark's, Giovanni Gabrieli. The richness of colour and musical splendour of the Psalmen Davids, scored for several choruses and first to feature on the release, reflects the arts-minded Saxon court for which they were composed; next comes a collection of motets, which similarly follow in the footsteps of Venetian composition through 'painting in sound' the content of the text and dividing the choir into two or more tonal groups. The motet played a significant role in church service music, and Schütz also wrote a number of polychoral concertos for festive occasions, the affective Magnificat anima mea SWV468 for Christmas among them. Rounding off the compilation is the composer's Schwanengesang, literally meaning 'Swan Song' and deemed to be his parting gift to the world -- here Luther's version of the 'German Magnificat' at the end of the piece reveals Schütz's taking on the role of musical interpreter in the cause of Lutheran teaching. The renowned Dresden Kreuzchor became closely associated with the works of Schütz under the directorship of Rudolf Mauersberger, who made the choir an instrument of singular appeal. Here they feature alongside a number of other distinguished German choral groups and ensembles, including the Berliner Solisten, to perform the works of a composer who represented an important transitional phase in sacred music.Other information:- Recordings made in 1965, 1970 and 1983--4.- Heinrich Schütz was no doubt one of the most important composers from the period of transition from Renaissance to Baroque, a German who imbued the strict german polyphony with Italian melos of warmth and emotion. Johann Sebastian Bach considered him the greatest of his predecessors.- Brilliant Classics has given Schütz ample due in its Schütz Edition volumes 1-4, and this new set presents some of his grandest works, the splendid Psalms of David, Polychoral Concertos and Motets and his moving Schwanengesang, music both magnificent and intimate.- Performances in the best german choral tradition by the famous Dresdner Kreuzchor, Capella Fidicina and the Berliner Solisten.- Booklet contains detailed notes on the composer and his music.

Rimsky-Korsakov: Cantatas Brilliant Classics

Książki

As was tradition in his family, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov trained to be a naval cadet. He continued to compose throughout his years in service and was appointed Professor of Composition and Orchestration at the St Petersburg Conservatory, despite having an extremely limited knowledge of music theory. He is now remembered as one of the most influential Russian Nationalist composers of all time, and was an integral member of 'The Five'.This disc brings together the great composer's cantatas. The Poem about Aleksey, the Man of God Op.20 originally appeared as a chorale in his opera The Maid of Pskov, and Rimsky-Korsakov later created a separate work from it. The Song of Oleg the Wise Op.58 is written in a marital style, as befits the subject matter of the ruler and warrior Oleg; Switezianka Op.44, a cantata for two soloists, is of a similar style. Also on the disc is From Homer Op.60, a tantalising glimpse of what might have been if Rimsky-Korsakov had continued to write his opera based on Homer's Odyssey; the work is made up of the intended orchestral introduction and opening chorus of the opera. It depicts the storm that washes Odysseus onto the shores of Phaecia, and shows the composer's talent for writing for female voices, including a trio (soprano, mezzo-soprano, contralto) and a female chorus. The cantatas feature the Chorus of the Moscow Academy of Choral Art and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, as well as a host of accomplished soloists.Other information:- Recorded in 2001, the only CD available with these works.- Magnificent choral works, from an unexpected source: Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, composer of grand scale, lushly orchestrated symphonic works and colourful legend-based operas.- The texts are based mainly on Russian topics: fairy-tales, Russian heroes, but also a lengthy episode from Homer's Odysseus.- Contains extensive liner notes on the composer and works.
