Acceptance- and Mindfulness-Based Approaches to Anxiety Springer-Verlag New York Inc.

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

For many years, cognitive-behavioral techniques have been at the forefront of treatment for anxiety disorders. More recently, strategies rooted in Eastern concepts of acceptance and mindfulness have have demonstrated some promise in treating anxiety, especially in tandem with CBT. Now, with Acceptance-Based Behavioral Therapies for Anxiety, thirty expert clinicians and researchers present a comprehensive guide to integrating these powerful complementary approaches where they match, when they differ, and why they work so well together.§Chapter authors clearly place mindfulness and acceptance into the clinical lexicon, establishing links with established traditions, including emotion theory and experiential therapy. In addition, separate chapters discuss specific anxiety disorders, the current state of treatment for each, and practical ways of integrating acceptance and mindfulness approaches into therapy.§Book Reviews:§"Orsillo and Roemer are true scientist-practitioners with their broad and deep knowledge of cognitive behavioral concepts and their years of applying these concepts to relieve suffering from anxiety. In this book they take us to the cutting-edge of new psychological approaches to anxiety disorders. Every clinician will want to be aware of these latest advances." §-David H. Barlow, Ph.D.Director, Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at Boston UniversityProfessor of PsychologyResearch Professor of Psychiatry.§"Few others could make the case for acceptance and mindfulness-based care of anxiety disorders as well as Orsillo and Roemer have done. Tacking deftly between innovation and empirical science this book shows how traditional anxiety treatments, supplemented by acceptance and mindfulness practices, can achieve an expanded scope of relevance and efficacy. Their careful operationalization and description of these practices along with a few caveats regarding this nascent union, enables the reader to navigate comfortably in novel territory. Ideal for therapists, researchers and students the material presented in this book will likely form the backbone of the next generation of treatment for complex anxiety disorders" §-Zindel V. Segal, Ph.D., C.Psych. In Music and Probability, David Temperley explores issues in music perception and cognition from a probabilistic perspective. The application of probabilistic ideas to music has been pursued only sporadically over the past four decades, but the time is ripe, Temperley argues, for a reconsideration of how probabilities shape music perception and even music itself. Recent advances in the application of probability theory to other domains of cognitive modeling, coupled with new evidence and theoretical insights about the working of the musical mind, have laid the groundwork for more fruitful investigations. Temperley proposes computational models for two basic cognitive processes, the perception of key and the perception of meter, using techniques of Bayesian probabilistic modeling. Drawing on his own research and surveying recent work by others, Temperley explores a range of further issues in music and probability, including transcription, phrase perception, pattern perception, harmony, improvisation, and musical styles.Music and Probability -- the first full-length book to explore the application of probabilistic techniques to musical issues -- includes a concise survey of probability theory, with simple examples and a discussion of its application in other domains. Temperley relies most heavily on a Bayesian approach, which not only allows him to model the perception of meter and tonality but also sheds light on such perceptual processes as error detection, expectation, and pitch identification. Bayesian techniques also provide insights into such subtle and advanced issues as musical ambiguity, tension, and "grammaticality," and lead to interesting and novel predictions about compositional practice and differences between musical styles.

Sociology & Mass Culture - 2212826258

Sociology & Mass Culture University of Toronto Press

Inne 1

In this concise and engaging work, Patricia Cormack investigates the broad cultural significance and relevance of academic sociology by examining its on-going relationship with modernity and mass culture. She bids us, rather than deny sociology's participation in culture, to see the discipline as informing ethical, epistemological and pedagogical questions. Through an examination of the writings of Emile Durkheim, C. Wright Mills and Jean Baudrillard, Cormack illustrates how their formulations of sociology as a cultural practice is rooted in the very mass culture that it studies. Central to the argument is a discussion of conceptual and rhetorical devices - "totems" and "tropes" - within social theory. In agreement with the three theorist subjects, Cormack posits that the social is a discursive artifact, becoming over time a "social fact", explaining and sustaining ordinary life. Durkheim treats the 19th century birth of sociology (in which he played a large part), as an intrinsic aspect of modern cultural consciousness. Mills advances this view further, treating the "Sociological Imagination" as part of and informing, mass culture. Baudrillard treats sociological reason as now equivalent to and inextricable from commonsense understandings of the culture it seeks to understand - rendering the sociological project essentially mute. Of value to social scientists, and theorists in particular, this is a specialized volume - a sociology of sociology - written at senior undergraduate or graduate level. It is intended as textually oriented ethnography, and thus presents a theoretical rather than empirical investigation of the relationship between sociology and culture.
