"As warm and stimulating as a library to which one returns again and again."--"Chicago Tribune" (Editor's Choice) While books contain insights into our selves and the world, it takes a conversation--between the author and the reader, or between two readers--to bring them fully to life. Drawing on sources as diverse as Dr. Seuss and Simone Weil, P. G. Wodehouse and Isaiah Berlin, Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Michael Dirda shows how the wit, wisdom, and enchantment of the written word informs and enriches nearly every aspect of life, from education and work to love and death. Organized by significant life events and abounding with quotations from great writers and thinkers, "Book by Book" showcases Dirda's capacious love for and understanding of books. Favoring showing as much as telling, Dirda draws us deeper into the classics, as well as lesser-known works of literature, history, and philosophy, always with an eye to how we might better understand our lives.

Dictionary of German Biography v 9 Saur Verlag KG

Historia

The Dictionary of German Biography is the English-language version of the renowned Deutsche Biographische Enzyklopädie. It is a unique and comprehensive work containing biographies of some 56,000 people from the German-speaking world: covering individuals from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and other regions where German is or was spoken. Chronologically, the dictionary's coverage stretches all the way from the time of Charlemagne to the present day and includes only individuals whose life and works have come to an end. The Dictionary of German Biography was produced by a team of outstanding scholars headed by Editors in Chief Walther Killy and Rudolf Vierhaus. An advisory board made up of experts in individual fields ensured that the same rigorous standards were observed for all subject areas. More than 500 leading academics from around the world contributed articles for the Dictionary. This commitment to high academic standards has already made the Dictionary a standard work in Germany. Completed between 1995 and 2003, the 10 volume German version of the Dictionary of German Biography and its supplementary volumes provide the latest information in a unique, compact format, covering all persons from A to Z. It is the obvious choice for people wanting biographical information from a vast number of areas. Each entry opens with a concise biographical summary allowing the user to place the relevant individual immediately. These summaries consist of the person's surname (with all its variations), first name, Pseudonyms, maiden names and wrongly attributed names (where applicable), title, occupation and dates and places of birth and death. The articles themselves outline the most important events in the person's life, including details of education, significant encounters, career, family and friendships, associations, achievements, prizes and honours. For those wishing to study an individual in greater depth, the entries also contain bibliographical references to further literature on that person. The Dictionary of German Biography also contains approximately 1,000 extensive articles written specifically for this edition and signed by recognized experts on particularly significant people. The Dictionary of German Biography provides a wealth of fascinating information. For many it is an endless source of delight simply to browse from one entry to the next. Of course, all the world-famous Germans can be found here. Political leaders whose influence effected the world well beyond the bounds of modern-day Germany, such as Charlemagne, Frederick the Great, Bismarck and Hitler, are all covered in depth as are outstanding names from the world of science, such as Kepler, Copernicus and Einstein. You can find detailed articles on the great philosophers Kant, Hegel and Nietzsche, the composers Bach, Mozart and Wagner, writers such as Goethe, Kafka and Brecht, inventors such as Diesel and captains of industry such as Thyssen, Daimler and Krupp. The Dictionary of German Biography also contains numerous entries for people who despite great achievements remained relatively unknown or have since been forgotten. There are entries for Adolf Dassler, founder of the company Adidas, and Oskar Schindler, for example. All individuals covered in the Dictionary of German Biography, whether household names, or virtually forgotten people of earlier times, have one thing in common: they left their mark on an era and helped shape later developments. They are people who have influenced the past and present. The Dictionary of German Biography not only gives the latest information on the people we remember, it brings the past to life. The individual biographies have been put together to form a comprehensive history of German-speaking Europe. The Dictionary will therefore be of great interest to anyone who is interested in German history, culture and biographies. It will also be of interest to those specializing in one of the many subject areas in which the individual people covered here were influential well beyond the German-speaking world.

Two Popes Penguin Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

On 28 February 2013, a 600-year-old tradition was shattered: the conservative Pope Benedict XVI made a startling announcement. He would resign. Reeling from the news, the College of Cardinals rushed to Rome to congregate in the Sistine Chapel to pick his successor. Their unlikely choice? Francis, the first non-European pope in 1,200 years, a one time tango club bouncer, a passionate football fan, a man with the common touch. From the prize-winning screenwriter of The Theory of Everything and Darkest Hour, The Pope is a fascinating, revealing and often funny tale of two very different men whose destinies converge with each other - they both live in the Vatican - and the wider world. How did these two men become two of the most powerful people on Earth? What's it like to be the Pope? What does the future hold for the Catholic Church and its 1 billion followers? The Pope is a dual biography that masterfully combines these two popes' lives into one gripping narrative. From Benedict and Francis' experiences of war in their homelands - when they were still Joseph and Jorge - and the sexual abuse scandal that continues to rock the Church to its foundations, to the intrigue and the occasional comedy of life in the Vatican, The Pope glitters with the darker and the lighter details of life inside one of the world's most opaque but significant institutions.

Hispanic Marketing Butterworth Heinemann

Biznes

This book is about strategic thinking in Hispanic marketing. The size and economic importance of the Hispanic market in the US are attracting enormous attention. The buying power of the US Hispanic market is now larger than the GDP of the entire country of Mexico, and it is the second largest Hispanic market in the world. Businesses and institutions have launched major initiatives to reach this important segment. Yet, the number of qualified individuals who understand the market is small; and many of those already catering to the market still struggle to learn about its intricacies. This book is a cultural approach to Hispanic marketing. Each of the chapters describes and explains the cultural principles of Latino marketing. Recent case studies help marketers relate to the material pragmatically. The book integrates concepts and practical examples and provides critical guidance to discern between alternative courses of action. This book is not about repeating well-known statistics, but about the Hispanic market as a cultural target. It takes a profound look at the values, beliefs, and emotions of US Hispanics, which impact consumer behaviour. Each of the chapters has been the subject of public presentations and lectures to marketing professionals. It is their positive reactions as well as the authors

Essential University Physics Addison Wesley Publishing Company

Inne 1

Richard Wolfson's Essential University Physics is a concise and progressive calculus-based physics textbook that offers clear writing, great problems, and interesting real-life applications. At nearly half the length and half the price of other physics texts, Essential University Physics is a compelling alternative for professors who want to focus on the fundamentals. Based on Physics for Scientists and Engineers by Wolfson and Pasachoff, Essential University Physics retains many of the favorite features of the original text, while introducing new pedagogical elements that incorporate proven results from physics education research. The text focuses on the fundamentals of physics, teaches sound problem-solving skills, emphasizes conceptual understanding, and makes connections to the real world. Features such as annotated figures and step-by-step problem-solving strategies help provide a clear learning path for students. The crisp two-color design is clear and engaging. The book incorporates the research-proven approach of annotated figures, pencil-style sketches in worked examples, and visual chapter summaries. A self-evident hierarchy of pedagogical features guides the student easily through the material.  Essential University Physics is offered as three paperback volumes, available shrink-wrapped together and for sale individually. (Sold individually in select markets only.)  Focus on the fundamentals: The overarching theme is physics has a simple, elementary foundation that underlies seemingly disconnected topics.    To Learn and To Know features offer learning goals and topics to review at each chapter's outset to highlight the chapter's key skills and ideas and its connections to other chapters.    Key equations and definitions are on screened boxes with titles and explanatory material, so that students will not simply grab a bare equation with no sense as to how it is applied. Tips offer concise explanatory or cautionary notes for typical misconceptions and identify the fundamental connections between new and old topics.   Visual chapter and part summaries present the big picture and provide visual reviews that focus on the concepts and connections of chapter material with an emphasis on multiple representations (words, math, and figures) of concepts. Teach sound problem-solving skills:  The consistent and explicit problem-solving strategy is designed to develop students' confidence and skill in systematically setting up problems rather than diving into the math.  The IDEA (Interpret, Develop, Evaluate, and Assess) framework, used in every worked example, begins with a problem's key ideas, stresses the importance of planning a solution and drawing a diagram, moves through the math, checks for reasonable answers, and relates the problem's content to a broader understanding of physics.   Strategy boxes provide specialized versions of the global strategy, adapted to specific topics. Pencil-style illustrations in worked examples show realistic figures that a student should draw. Tactics boxes review mathematical topics and develop individual skills. Emphasize conceptual understanding: Got It?questions present multiple-choice and ranking task problems in most sections to focus reading and identify misconceptions. The EOC section For Thought and Discussion contains qualitative questions that test understanding and promote collaborative reading with peers. Every worked example begins byinterpreting what a problem asks and identifying the relevant concepts.Connect to the real world: Every chapter has an Application box exploring a modern, cutting-edge use of the chapter's physics in the world. Informed by physics education research, context-rich problems in the end-of-chapter material require students to analyze the significant factors in physical scenarios set in the real world.  Chapter-opener photos showcase examples of physics in everyday life along with thought provoking questions.

Conceptual Representation and the Measurement of Psychological Forces Martino Fine Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

2013 Reprint of 1938 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Kurt Lewin (1890-1947) was a German-American psychologist, known as one of the modern pioneers of social, organizational, and applied psychology. Lewin is often recognized as the "founder of social psychology" and was one of the first to study group dynamics and organizational development. Lewin developed the concept of force field analysis, which provides a framework for looking at the factors (forces) that influence a situation, originally social situations. It looks at forces that are either driving movement toward a goal (helping forces) or blocking movement toward a goal (hindering forces). The principle, developed by Kurt Lewin, is a significant contribution to the fields of social science, psychology, social psychology, organizational development, process management, and change management. This book is an early effort to establish the principles of his force field analysis. An attempt is made to describe the position of the concept of force in psychology and to discuss major methods of measuring psychological forces. One of the outstanding properties of force is its directedness. Direction in psychology cannot be defined as physical direction and cannot be determined by Euclidian geometry. A geometry applicable in psychology is that of hodological space. The geometrical properties of this space are described, and examples of its application in determining directions and distances in the life space are offered. The conceptual properties of the construct of force are given, as well as a definition coordinating it with observable processes. The conceptual and dynamic relation between psychological forces, valences, and tensions are discussed, as are certain basic theories concerning the relation between need, environment, and the "mechanics" of locomotion. Various methods of measuring forces and valences are surveyed, especially those related to opposing forces and to velocity of locomotion, including velocity and restlessness, consumption, translocation, and learning. The problem of the structure of the force field and of overlapping force fields is discussed, including several choice and conflict situations with stable and labile equilibria.

A Choice Outstanding Academic Title, 2008 A Cultural History of Animals in the Medieval Age investigates the changing roles of animals in medieval culture, economy and society in the period 1000 to 1400. The period saw significant changes in scientific and philosophical approaches to animals as well as their representation in art. Animals were omnipresent in medieval everyday life. They had enormous importance for medieval agriculture and trade and were also hunted for food and used in popular entertainments. At the same time, animals were kept as pets and used to display their owner's status, whilst medieval religion attributed complex symbolic meanings to animals. As with all the volumes in the illustrated Cultural History of Animals, this volume presents an overview of the period and continues with essays on the position of animals in contemporary symbolism, hunting, domestication, sports and entertainment, science, philosophy, and art. Volume 2 in the Cultural History of Animals edited by Linda Kalof and Brigitte Resl.
