Breeding of Sugarcane Using Biotechnological Approaches VDM Verlag Dr. M

Sugarcane is an important food-cum cash crop and the only source of sugar production in Bangladesh. However, its productivity seriously hampered due to pest, and diseases especially, due to red rot disease, which is proven difficult to control through fungicides. On the other hand, high ploidy, low fertility, large genome and complex environmental interactions make conventional arduous for sugarcane improvement. In this context, biotechnological approaches such as induction of somaclonal variation can be used to create new genetic variability for improvement of this crop. In this work a large number of plants were raised through callus culture and the plants regenerated were successfully established in the field for study of somaclonal variation. Genetic analysis shows that the varieties and the somaclones were phenotypically distant. Tree diagram indicates that Co 1158 and all of it somaclones remained in the same subclass but other varieties with their somaclones were amalgamated in different subclasses. The somaclones Amrita SC-4, Amrita SC-5, Isd 18 SC-5 and Misrimala SC-2 could be used in future breeding program for development of sugarcane varieties in Bangladesh.

Chinese and Indian outbound M&A activities have recently attracted enormous attention in the Western hemisphere. However, little is known about the newly internationalising firms, especially with respect to their motives and strategic behaviour. The master's thesis at hand tackles this shortcoming by analysing the internationalisation process of 11 emerging multinationals from China. The results provide new insights into the distinctive and often unconventional strategic patterns of emerging multinationals. Four alternative pathways can be identified, namely the pathway of Exporters, Followers, Penetrators, and Challengers. Each pathway is characterised by its individual strategic moves toward internationalisation. The master's thesis was submitted in May, 2008.

Attrition rates for students enrolled in online courses are traditionally higher than face to face courses. One factor that impacts attrition is student psychological sense of community (PSOC). Using research that examined the PSOC in residential neighborhoods, Dr. Laughner surveyed thousands of students nationwide enrolled in distance education courses. The results reveal that not only is there a profound difference in students'' PSOC between online and face-to-face courses, but those differences are impacted by gender, age, and ethnicity.

The present paper looks at the effects of two different kinds of treatment on stability, sensomotor function and symmetry. The hypotheses regarding the lateral triggerband in the thigh according to the principles of the fascia distortion model of Dr. Stephen Typaldos, D.O, are examined to find out whether an improvement of the mentioned parameters can be achieved. The study is designed as randomized blind study with 75 test persons equally divided into experimental group, comparison group and control group. The special technique applied in this study has its origin in orthopathy, while the global technique is derived from massage. The first consists in a treatment of the lateral triggerband of the thigh according to the fascia distortion model; the latter applies friction according to traditional therapeutic massage. The test parameters were assessed by means of an MFT-S3 measuring disc and the data collected and analyzed with the corresponding software. The collected data were imported into the SPSS software to calculate the results.

Periodontal disease is one of the most common afflictions worldwide. Bone grafting is the most common form of regenerative therapy today and it has been shown to produce successful clinical results. There are wide ranges of bone graft materials available for use in periodontics and Bovine derived hydroxyapatite (xenograft) is bone substitute, which is commercially available. The positive effects of anabolic steroids on osteoblasts and fibroblasts have been documented in both medical and periodontal literature. An indigenous medicinal herb called as Cissus quadrangularis (common name Harjor), besides other ingredients, contains highly potent anabolic steroid and has been traditionally used for accelerating fracture healing. The beneficial effects of this herb in fracture management have been confirmed by both experimental and clinical studies, but its efficacy in enhancing periodontal regeneration has not been evaluated. The present study clinically evaluates the efficacy of bovine derived hydroxyapatite combined with Cissus quadrangularis, as compared to bovine derived hydroxyapatite alone in the treatment of infrabony defects.

The Biosynthesis Pathway of PyrroloQuinoline Quinone (PQQ) VDM Verlag Dr. M

The biosynthesis pathway of PyrroloQuinoline Quinone, a bacterial redox active cofactor for numerous dehydrogenases, is largely unknown, but it is known that at least six genes PqqA-F) are required, all of which are located in the PQQ-operon. New structural data of some PQQ biosynthesis proteins and their homologues provide new insights and functional assignments of the proteins in the pathway. Based on sequence analysis and homology models I propose the role and catalytic function for each enzyme involved in this intriguing biosynthesis pathway. PQQ is derived from the two amino acids glutamate and tyrosine encoded in the precursor peptide PqqA. Five reactions are necessary to form this quinone cofactor. The PqqA peptide is recognised by PqqE, which links two carbon atoms, afterwards it is accepted by PqqF which cuts out the linked amino acids. The next reaction (Schiff base) is spontaneous, the following dioxygenation is catalysed by an unknown enzyme. The last cyclization and oxidation steps are catalysed by PqqC. Taken together the known facts of the different proteins I assign a putative function to all six proteins in the PQQ biosynthesis pathway.
