A lonely young woman working in a boys' prison outside Boston in the early 60s is pulled into a very strange crime, in a mordant, harrowing story of obsession and suspense, by one of the brightest new voices in fictionSo here we are. My name was Eileen Dunlop. Now you know me. I was twenty-four years old then, and had a job that paid fifty-seven dollars a week as a kind of secretary at a private juvenile correctional facility for teenage boys. I think of it now as what it really was for all intents and purposes-a prison for boys. I will call it Moorehead. Delvin Moorehead was a terrible landlord I had years later, and so to use his name for such a place feels appropriate. In a week, I would run away from home and never go back. This is the story of how I disappeared. The Christmas season offers little cheer for Eileen Dunlop, an unassuming yet disturbed young woman trapped between her role as her alcoholic father's caretaker in a home whose squalor is the talk of the neighborhood and a day job as a secretary at the boys' prison, filled with its own quotidian horrors. Consumed by resentment and self-loathing, Eileen tempers her dreary days with perverse fantasies and dreams of escaping to the big city. In the meantime, she fills her nights and weekends with shoplifting, stalking a buff prison guard named Randy, and cleaning up her increasingly deranged father's messes. When the bright, beautiful, and cheery Rebecca Saint John arrives on the scene as the new counselor at Moorehead, Eileen is enchanted and proves unable to resist what appears at first to be a miraculously budding friendship. In a Hitchcockian twist, her affection for Rebecca ultimately pulls her into complicity in a crime that surpasses her wildest imaginings.Played out against the snowy landscape of coastal New England in the days leading up to Christmas, young Eileen's story is told from the gimlet-eyed perspective of the now much older narrator. Creepy, mesmerizing, and sublimely funny, in the tradition of Shirley Jackson and early Vladimir Nabokov, this powerful debut novel enthralls and shocks, and introduces one of the most original new voices in contemporary literature.

Sacred Name Bible - 2874801836

God Almighty said in Exodus 20:7 (KJV) "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that takes His name in vain." In the reverent attempt to make sure no one ever breaks this vital commandment, the Jewish rabbis decided thousands of years ago not to ever pronounce God's Sacred Name which in Hebrew is spelled YHVH. In place of His Name, they decided to say "Adonai" or "HaShem" ("The Name" in Hebrew). May God bless them for so carefully and reverently obeying His command. Jewish people still follow this custom today. Bible translators do also. They replace God's Name with "LORD" in all capital letters (as in the verse above). In fact, the adherence to this Rabbinical rule has been so complete that the correct pronunciation of the Almighty's Awesome, Sacred Name has been lost. No one today knows for sure how it was pronounced. We wonder, is that what the Creator of the Universe had in mind? Does He really never want to hear His Name on our lips, if spoken with great reverence and awe? He put His Name in the Bible almost 7000 times. David, "a man after God's own heart," wrote this Sacred, Hebrew Name almost 800 times in the Psalms, most likely also pronouncing it when he recited, prayed, or sang those psalms to YHVH. It is a beautiful blessing just to see the Hebrew Sacred Name throughout the Scriptures-a feast for our eyes and souls and spirits. Maybe someday we will also have the blessing to know how to proclaim His Name aloud in power, sing His Name lovingly in praise, and call upon His Sacred Name sincerely in supplication. However, since HaShem allowed the sound of His Name to be lost, perhaps He wants it spoken only in private truly reverently. Two most likely pronunciations put forth by Hebrew scholars are: "Yehovah" or "Yahoveh." It is not pronounced "Jehovah" because there is no "j" sound in Hebrew. It is not "Yahweh" because there is no "w" sound in Hebrew. (Although some say that in ancient Hebrew, there was a sound somewhere between a "w" and a "v".) May ADONAI Himself reveal, if He wills, how to say---in secret prayer and worship time---with all respect, honor, and reverence---His Most Holy, powerful Name. There is so much deep meaning and beauty in the Sacred Name, YHVH. There is the meaning of existing, of breath, and of past, present, and future. And when you look at the meanings of the individual Hebrew letters of YHVH, there is something very astounding. Hebrew letters were originally pictographs, each one having a meaning. The Hebrew "Y" has the underlying meaning of "hand," the background meaning of the "H" is "window" or "behold." The "V" was originally a picture of tent peg or a nail. Put this together, and it says "hand, behold, nail, behold." Since the Hebrew grammar is often backwards from English, we can turn that around to say: "Behold the hand, behold the nail." Doesn't that just give you revelation chills of awe? May the LORD keep on revealing to us more and more about His Sacred Hebrew Name. Find out something similarly astounding about our Messiah and Savior's Sacred Hebrew Name, Yeshua, in this Bible and on Olive Press Publisher's website. You will be so amazed. This Bible uses the King James Version with only these changes: &a

Here is narrative nonfiction at its most gripping. Journalist Jennifer Jordan chronicled the individual stories of the five courageous women who have climbed K2, the most fearsome mountain in the world. Climbers call K2 "The Savage Mountain." It is not quite as tall as Everest, but it is far more dangerous, located at the border of China and Pakistan, in the deadly Karakoram range, which has the harshest climbing conditions and weather of any place in the world. Ninety women have climbed Everest, but only five female climbers have ever reached the summit of K2 alive. Three of these women died on the way back down the mountain, and the other two have died since their climb. Because, these five women, who defeated the most ferocious of all mountains, have lost their own voices, "Savage Summit" told their tragic and compelling stories. The terror and triumph of K2 was revealed through the stories of the few women who have succeeded in climbing it. The women in these stories are forced to deal with harsh conditions from the mountain, and from the men climbing around them, often being treated unfairly or discriminated against in their struggle to get to the summit."Savage Summit" also attempted to answer tough questions: do female climbers rely too much on their male climbing partners? Are women prepared for the physiological and emotional rigors of K2? Are female climbers, because of the publicity and sponsorship opportunities afforded them, climbing the mountain without the proper training, endangering their own lives and the lives of those who climb with them? And, if women are as capable of men of climbing this most deadly peak, who will be next to attempt the long trek to the summit?

Now, she s hoping to transform her city into something new. Something better. Together with allies Orso, Gregor, and Berenice, she s about to strike a deadly blow against Tevanne s cruel robber-baron rulers and wrest power from their hands for the first time in decades. But then comes a terrifying warning: Crasedes Magnus himself, the first of the legendary hierophants, is about to be reborn. Noise of Infinite Longing Harper Collins

Historia

Lyrical and forceful, The Noise of Infinite Longing is about a family's origins, its place in society, its illusions, and, ultimately, what happened when its members moved in different directions. The book opens with the death of the author's mother, which brings together all six of her children in one place for the first time in almost a decade. During four days of funeral arrangements, burial, and mourning, Torregrosa simultaneously unfolds her family's story, past and present, and illuminates the history of Puerto Rico. The Noise of Infinite Longing is a unique story about the dispersal and passage of Puerto Ricans and other Latin Americans to countries not their own, seen through the lens of one family's experiences. But it is also a universal story -- of personal and cultural roots that are too strong to be completely severed, and of the passionate and anguished search for what we call home.

An engrossing and revealing study of why we deem certain animals "pests" and others not-from cats to rats, elephants to pigeons-and what this tells us about our own perceptions, beliefs, and actions, as well as our place in the natural worldA squirrel in the garden. A rat in the wall. A pigeon on the street. Humans have spent so much of our history drawing a hard line between human spaces and wild places. When animals pop up where we don't expect or want them, we respond with fear, rage, or simple annoyance. It's no longer an animal. It's a pest.At the intersection of science, history, and narrative journalism, Pests is not a simple call to look closer at our urban ecosystem. It's not a natural history of the animals we hate. Instead, this book is about us. It's about what calling an animal a pest says about people, how we live, and what we want. It's a story about human nature, and how we categorize the animals in our midst, including bears and coyotes, sparrows and snakes. Pet or pest? In many cases, it's entirely a question of perspective.Bethany Brookshire's deeply researched and entirely entertaining book will show readers what there is to venerate in vermin, and help them appreciate how these animals have clawed their way to success as we did everything we could to ensure their failure. In the process, we will learn how the pests that annoy us tell us far more about humanity than they do about the animals themselves.

THE LITTLE FRIEND BLOOMSBURY

Główna > Główna/Książki

Although the Cleves generally revelled in every detail of their family history, the events of 'the terrible Mother's Day' were never, ever discussed. On that day, nine-year-old Robin Cleves, loved by all for his whims and peculiarities, was found hanging by the neck from a rope slung over a black-tupelo tree in his own garden. Eleven years later, the mystery - with its taunting traces of foul play - was no nearer a solution than it had been on the day it happened. This isn't good enough for Robin's youngest sister Harriet. Only a baby when the tragedy occurred, but now twelve-years-old and steeped in the adventurous daring of favourite writers such as Stevenson, Kipling and Conan Doyle, Harriet is ready and eager to find and punish her brother's killer. Her closest friend Hely - who would try anything to make Harriet love him - has sworn allegiance to her call for revenge. But the world these plucky twelve-year-olds are to encounter has nothing to do with child's play: it is dark, adult and all too menacing. In Donna Tartt's Mississippi, the sense of place and sense of the past mingle redolently with rich human drama to create a collective alchemy. Here eccentric great aunts bustle about graciously despite faded fortunes and a child's inquiring mind not only unearths telling family artefacts, but stirs up a neighbourhood nest of vipers and larceny. THE LITTLE FRIEND is a profoundly involving novel which demonstrates how the imaginary life embraces what literature we read, what special places we inhabit and what kindred souls we recognize, to help crack open even the darkest secrets life has hiding for us.
