INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER From the award-winning author of Station Eleven, an exhilarating novel set at the glittering intersection of two seemingly disparate events the exposure of a massive criminal enterprise and the mysterious disappearance of a woman from a ship at sea. The perfect novel ... Freshly mysterious. The Washington PostVincent is a bartender at the Hotel Caiette, a five-star lodging on the northernmost tip of Vancouver Island. On the night she meets Jonathan Alkaitis, a hooded figure scrawls a message on the lobby's glass wall: Why don t you swallow broken glass. When his scheme collapses, it obliterates countless fortunes and devastates lives. Vincent, who had been posing as Jonathan s wife, walks away into the night. Years later, a victim of the fraud is hired to investigate a strange occurrence: a woman has seemingly vanished from the deck of a container ship between ports of call. In this captivating story of crisis and survival, Emily St. John Mandel takes readers through often hidden landscapes: campgrounds for the near-homeless, underground electronica clubs, service in luxury hotels, and life in a federal prison. Rife with unexpected beauty, The Glass Hotel is a captivating portrait of greed and guilt, love and delusion, ghosts and unintended consequences, and the infinite ways we search for meaning in our lives.Look for Emily St. John Mandel s new novel, Sea of Tranquility, coming in April 2022!

Spindrift Orbit

Science-fictionPowieść zagraniczna

Spindrift is told from the points of view of three characters, Emily Collins is the shuttle pilot on board the Galileo. Ted Harker is not only the second in command of the Galileo, but also Emily's lover in what may be the worst kept secret on the ship. Finally, Jared Ramirez, a scientist aboard the spaceship who specializes in xenobiology, and who prior to joining the crew of the Galileo was serving a life sentence for participating in a genocidal act.Initially shunned by the entire crew, Ramirez eventually makes common cause with Harker and Collins based on their shared disdain for the incompetent popinjay of a captain, Ian Lawrence. This results in the three of them, plus scientist Jorge Cruz, making an extravehicular trip to the Spindrift once the Galileo reaches its target. In many ways, the Spindrift is simply a maguffin for the crew to explore and figure out. Its primary purpose in terms of the novel is first to get the crew of the Galileo to its destination and then to provide a puzzle for Harker, Collins, Ramirez, and Cruz to solve. Steele skillfully merges the group's interpersonal relationships with their discovery of the purpose of the Spindrift, and then provides evidence that everything they thought they knew was incorrect. While this voyage of discovery is at the core of Steele's novel, he does incorporate other hooks as well. The tensions on the Galileo play an important role in what happens on the ship while the small team is exploring the Spindrift. Even when the team is separated from Lawrence, the Captain, his incompetence, and his own agenda continue to play a major role in what the characters can do and they must respond to him.The novel is surrounded by a framing technique, so even as the main story is begun, the reader already knows who will survive the encounter with the Spindrift. What Steele leaves open is the manner in which that survival occurs and what the crew learns during the course of their mission. Fortunately, the main section of the novel is interesting and well written enough that knowing, in general terms, the outcome is not detrimental. For all the exploration, discoveries, petty (and not so petty) animosities, and characterizations, Spindrift is a novel in which nothing really seems to come to a conclusion. Spindrift almost appears to be written as a prologue for a novel which will deal with many of the same themes in a much more epic fashion. Steele's writing style helps carry the novel and his characters cause the reader to want to find out how their lives will end as mysteries are proposed and their solutions revealed.

p"Early in 1907 one night, lying awake and pondering on the extraordinary world we live in, the idea came to me of what it must have been like to the cave men who had no language and for whom a sunset had no name tacked on to it, a storm no name, life no name, death no name and birth no name, and the idea came to me of two children, knowing nothing about any of these things, żnding themselves alone on a desert island facing these nameless wonders." Thus Henry de Vere Stacpoole described the inspiration for his runaway bestseller of 1908, iThe Blue Lagoon/i.pArthur Lestrange embarks on a sea voyage for his health, taking with him his young son Richard and niece Emmeline. But when the ship catches fire and its passengers flee in lifeboats, the family becomes separated, and the two children wash ashore on an uninhabited island in the South Pacific. Accompanied only by an old Irish sailor, Dick and Em must learn to adapt and survive in their new home. But the idyllic beauty of their tropical island belies the danger that surrounds them as they come to terms with forces they cannot understand: life, death, and their growing love for one another.pA huge success on both sides of the Atlantic when first published, Stacpoole's romance returns to print in this first-ever scholarly edition by Adrienne E. Gavin. This edition features an introduction, notes, and a chronology of Stacpoole's life and career, as well as the unabridged text of the first edition and a cover illustration by Willy Pogany from the rare 1910 edition. As Professor Gavin notes in her introduction, Stacpoole's tale of escape from the pressures of modern life and return to a simple life close to nature has lost none of its appeal in the century since its publication; in fact, it may be more relevant today than ever.

Vincent is the beautiful bartender at the Hotel Caiette, a five-star glass-and-cedar palace on the northernmost tip of Vancouver Island. New York financier Jonathan Alkaitis owns the hotel. When he passes Vincent his card with a tip, it's the beginning of their life together. That same day, a hooded figure scrawls a note on the windowed wall of the hotel: 'Why don't you swallow broken glass.' Leon Prevant, a shipping executive for a company called Neptune-Avramidis, sees the note from the hotel bar and is shaken to his core. Thirteen years later Vincent mysteriously disappears from the deck of a Neptune-Avramidis ship. Weaving together the lives of these characters, Emily St. John Mandel's The Glass Hotel moves between the ship, the towers of Manhattan and the wilderness of remote British Columbia, painting a breathtaking picture of greed and guilt, fantasy and delusion, art and the ghosts of our pasts.

The Sea Wolf - Jack London

Książki & Multimedia > Książki

Opis - The Sea-Wolf belongs in the honorific tradition of American sea fiction where the voyage motif became a means of exploring the meaning of life, as in Richard Henry Dana's Two Years Before the Mast (1840), Edgar Allan Poe's The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym (1838), and Herman Melville's Moby Dick (1851). The dominant subject is an intellectual conflict between a ship-wrecked literary figure, Humphrey Van Weyden, and the brutal captain of a seal-hunting schooner, Wolf Larsen, who rescues Van Weyden and puts him to menial work on the schooner. The central chapters focus on the gory details of seal-hunting, and the final section shows how far Van Weyden has learned seamanship as he restores The Ghost to sailing health and returns to port with the only woman passenger, another shipwrecked figure, to plight their troth. Frank A. Worsley was the captain of the H.M.S. Endurance, the ship used by the legendary explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton in his 1914-16 expedition to the Antarctic. On its way to the Antarctic continent the Endurance became trapped and then crushed by ice, and the ship's party of twenty-eight drifted on an ice floe for five months. Finally reaching an uninhabited island, Shackleton, Worsley, and four others sailed eight hundred miles in a small boat to the island of South Georgia, an astounding feat of navigation and courage. All hands survived this ill-fated expedition; as Worsley writes, "By self-sacrifice and throwing his own life into the balance, [Shackleton] saved every one of his men . . . although at times it had looked unlikely that one could be saved." "This remarkable book . . . shows [Shackleton] both luckless and lucky, and supremely cool and courageous throughout. Worsley writes without heroics . . . but makes us feel to the marrow the conditions that the party endured before all hands were rescued." The New Yorker "Worsley's account of that journey is a breath-taking story of courage, skill and determination under the most appalling conditions." Sir Edmund Hillary"
