Vladimir Putin and the New World Order Rowman & Littlefield

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

J. L. Black's latest work is a rich and carefully crafted attempt to expose the textures of Russia's perceptions of itself and its place in the world. Based almost entirely on Russian sources, J. L. Black found himself returning to the old practice of citing and decoding feature items from the Russian press. The difference between then and now, of course, is that at that time there was the struggle to read between the lines while now he reads and tries to digest the lines themselves-the Russian press still provides a very good indication of prevailing moods within the political and military elite establishments of Moscow. It is also still evident that if we are to understand Russian foreign policy-making, we must attempt to view international situations through the prism of Russian analysts and officials. Only then can we draw conclusions based on both our and their perceptions of current events and visions for the future. Vladimir Putin and the New World Order is divided into two parts. The first is a chronologically organized story of Putin's efforts to find a niche for Russia in the world since his sudden appointment as acting president at the end of December 1999. Throughout, Black places great emphasis on the sequence of events to illustrate important patterns; for example, Putin's tendency to make dramatic overtures to the East as preparation for negotiations with the West. The book's second part focuses on Russia's attention to specific regions of the world and types of international activity. These include individual countries, such as China and Ukraine; regions like Central Asia and the Caucasus; integrative agencies, including the CIS; concepts and practices, among them matters of security and military reform; and the ambivalent Russian associations with so-called "rogue" states.

Opis - I have to assume that there is a very real chance that Putin or members of his regime will have me killed some day. If I'm killed, you will know who did it. When my enemies read this book, they will know that you know. Reads like a classic thriller, with an everyman hero alone and in danger in a hostile foreign city ... but it's all true, and it a story that needs to be told. LEE CHILD An unburdening, a witness statement and a thriller all at the same time ... electrifying. THE TIMES A shocking true-life thriller. TOM STOPPARD --- In November 2009, a young lawyer was beaten to death by eight police officers in a freezing cell in a Moscow prison. His crime? Testifying against Russian officials who were involved in a conspiracy to steal $230 million of taxes. Red Notice is a searing expose of the whitewash of this imprisonment and murder. The killing hasn't been investigated. It hasn't been punished. Bill Browder is still campaigning for justice for his late lawyer and friend. This is his explosive journey from the heady world of finance in New York and London in the 1990s, through battles with ruthless oligarchs in turbulent post-Soviet Union Moscow, to the shadowy heart of the Kremlin. With fraud, bribery, corruption and torture exposed at every turn, Red Notice is a shocking political roller-coaster. As the Russian invasion of Georgia in August 2008 demonstrated in no uncertain terms, Russia has developed into a neo-imperialist power seeking to restore its spheres of dominance, to undermine the emergence of a wider Europe, and to prevent the development of a coherent transatlantic community. Under the Vladimir Putin and Dmitri Medvedev presidencies, the Russian Federation has set for itself an ambitious foreign policy goal of counterbalancing U.S. influence and curtailing the expansion of Western multinational institutions. This strategy's key component is to raise Russia's global stature and to diminish America's role by undermining the NATO alliance and neutralizing the European Union. The Georgian conflict demonstrates that Moscow is prepared to use military force to achieve its strategic objectives. Janusz Bugajski explores how the Russian authorities have systematically sought to undermine Western interests through sustained diplomatic campaigns, increasing control over energy supplies, escalating political subversion, and the recent military campaign in the Caucasus. He provides evidence that the notion of a 'strategic partnership' between Washington and Moscow is premature at best and a dangerous deception at worst. The struggle between the Western democratic model and the Russian authoritarian alternative will have a lasting impact on America's global alliances.

Russia's War Polity Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

In the early hours of 24th February 2022, Russian forces attacked Ukraine. The brutality of the Russian assault has horrified the world. But Russians themselves appear to be watching an entirely different war - one in which they are the courageous underdogs and kind-hearted heroes successfully battling a malign Ukrainian foe.Russia analyst Jade McGlynn takes us on a journey into this parallel military and political universe to reveal the sometimes monstruous, sometimes misconstrued attitudes behind Russian majority backing for the invasion. Drawing on media analysis and interviews with ordinary citizens, officials and foreign policy elites in Russia and Ukraine, McGlynn explores the grievances, lies and half-truths that pervade the Russian worldview. She also exposes the complicity of many Russians, who have invested too deeply in the Kremlin's alternative narratives to regard the war as Putin's foolhardy mission. In their eyes, this is Russia's war - against Ukraine, against the West, against evil - and there can be no turning back.

Russia, once seen as America's greatest adversary, is now viewed by the United States as a potential partner. This book traces the evolution of American foreign policy toward the Soviet Union, and later Russia, during the tumultuous and uncertain period following the end of the cold war. It examines how American policymakers --particularly in the executive branch --coped with the opportunities and challenges presented by the new Russia. Drawing on extensive interviews with senior U.S. and Russian officials, the authors explain George H. W. Bush's response to the dramatic coup of August 1991 and the Soviet breakup several months later, examine Bill Clinton's efforts to assist Russia's transformation and integration, and analyze George W. Bush's policy toward Russia as September 11 and the war in Iraq transformed international politics. Throughout, the book focuses on the benefits and perils of America's efforts to promote democracy and markets in Russia as well as reorient Russia from security threat to security ally. Understanding how three U.S. administrations dealt with these critical policy questions is vital in assessing not only America's Russia policy, but also efforts that might help to transform and integrate other former adversaries in the future.

Boris Yeltsin and Russia's Democratic Transformation University of Washington Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Boris Yeltsin is one of modern history's most dynamic and underappreciated figures. In this vivid, analytical masterwork, Herbert J. Ellison establishes Yeltsin as the principal leader and defender of Russia's democratic revolution - the very embodiment of Russia's fragile new liberties, including the evolving respect for the rule of law and private property as well as core freedoms of speech, religion, press, and political association. In 1987, President Mikhail Gorbachev expelled Boris Yeltsin from his team of reform politicians, but Yeltsin rebounded from this potentially devastating setback to become the leader of the Russian democratic movement. He created a new office of Russian president, to which he was elected; designed a democratic constitution for the Soviet Union that precipitated a coup attempt by traditionalist communist leaders; granted independence to the nations of the Soviet Union; and replaced Communist Party rule with democracy and the socialist economy with a market economy. In a short period, he had succeeded in becoming the first popularly elected leader in a thousand years of Russian history. He had blocked violent attempts at counter-revolution and overcome powerful resistance to his reform program. His achievements rank among the most extraordinary feats of political leadership in the twentieth century. Herbert J. Ellison has devoted his career to observing and recording Russian and Soviet political life. His foreign analyses are informed by his many visits to universities and policy institutes in Russia and the other former Soviet states. He has visited the successor states of the Soviet Union and met with senior figures in the Gorbachev and Yeltsin governments.

The events that have unfolded in the region of Eastern Europe in the first few months of 2014 have brought attention to a region which, not that long ago, was referred to as ?Europe?s unwanted child?. Undoubtedly, the rapid pace of changes requires equally rapid reactions from both the media and policymakers that are well-informed and free from preconceptions and simplifications in order to can avoid a further escalation of conflict. Keeping this goal in mind, the spring 2014 issue of New Eastern Europe offers a selection of texts on the situation in Eastern Europe from multiple perspectives: experts, journalists, activists and politicians, living both in and outside the region.A block of texts titled ?Putin?s Powers? looks at various aspects of Russian power and influence in the world today. James Sherr, British analysts with the London-based Chatham House and author of the widely discussed book Hard Diplomacy and Soft Coercion: Russia's Influence Abroad, offers an acute breakdown of Russia?s soft power strategy. Polish expert, Piotr Żochowski, analyses the Russian internal security apparatus and its mechanisms, while San Francisco-based professor of political science, Andrei P. Tsygankov, explains how Russia?s emphasis on its distinct civilizational values drives Putin?s foreign policy agenda. Lastly, Lithuanian philosopher and human rights? activist, Leonidas Donskis, asks the question ? Is the Russian language a failed lingua franca of Eastern Europe? The issue opens up with several analyses on the situation in Ukraine. Paweł Kowal and Maciej Wapiński, in their tale of the three Maidans, show how the latest Ukraine?s revolution was a continuation of two earlier upheavals after the fall of the Soviet Union. In an interview with the Mayor of Lviv, Andriy Sadovyy, the politician describes Ukraine?s European identity and what it will take to modernise the state. In a thought-provoking piece, Ukrainian journalist, Milan Lelich, depicts the two mentalities that exist in the country: in the east and the west, whereas civil society activist Halyna Senyk sketches the immense corruption that plagued Ukraine during the Viktor Yanukovych presidency. The issue also includes two articles that discuss the concept of Central Europe, revisiting Milan Kundera?s seminal essay ?The Tragedy of Central Europe?, in the context of the region today.

Voices from the Vietnam War The University Press of Kentucky

The Vietnam War's influence on politics, foreign policy, and subsequent military campaigns is the center of much debate and analysis. But the impact on veterans across the globe, as well as the war's effects on individual lives and communities, is a largely neglected issue. As a consequence of cultural and legal barriers, the oral histories of the Vietnam War currently available in English are predictably one-sided, providing limited insight into the inner workings of the Communist nations that participated in the war. Furthermore, many of these accounts focus on combat experiences rather than the backgrounds, belief systems, and social experiences of interviewees, resulting in an incomplete historiography of the war.Chinese native Xiaobing Li corrects this oversight in Voices from the Vietnam War: Stories from American, Asian, and Russian Veterans. Li spent seven years gathering hundreds of personal accounts from survivors of the war, accounts that span continents, nationalities, and political affiliations. The twenty-two intimate stories in the book feature the experiences of American, Chinese, Russian, Korean, and North and South Vietnamese veterans, representing the views of both anti-Communist and Communist participants, including Chinese officers of the PLA, a Russian missile-training instructor, and a KGB spy. These narratives humanize and contextualize the war's events while shedding light on aspects of the war previously unknown to Western scholars. Providing fresh perspectives on a long-discussed topic, Voices from the Vietnam War offers a thorough and unique understanding of America's longest war.Xiaobing Li, professor and chair of the Department of History and Geography and director of the Western Pacific Institute at the University of Central Oklahoma, is the author of China at War (2011), Civil Liberties in China (2010), A History of the Modern Chinese Army (2007), and coauthor of Voices from the Korean War (2004) and Mao's General Remember Korea (2002). He served in the People's Liberation Army in China.

Failed Crusade America & Tragedy of Post-Communist Russia W.W. Norton & Company

Inne 1

Failed Crusade reveals what really happened in Russia after the end of the Soviet Union and exposes the complicity of United States policy in a great human tragedy. Drawing on many years of studying and living in Russia, Stephen Cohen shows that what US officials and other experts call "reform" has for most Russians been a catastrophic development and for the US, the worst foreign policy disaster since Vietnam. An alarming analysis emerges of nuclear-laden Russia after 1991 and the corrupt Yeltsin era, as well as an indictment of American policy-makers who failed to see or report the truth about developments in Russia. Failed Crusade is also a deeply informed and passionate call for a new policy toward Russia in the new millennium. Arguing that the US crusade of the early 1990s to transform post-Communist Russia into a replica of America was ill-conceived and bound to be counter-productive, and that developments in Russia today represent a greater threat than they did during the Cold War, Cohen sets forth a bold plan for a fundamentally different American-Russian relationship in the post-Yeltsin era.

While, in an exclusive interview with New Eastern Europe, Russian economist Sergei Guriev believes that current Russian foreign policy will only isolate the country even more underlining the bleak outlook for the country?s economic future if such a path continues.
