Opis - From "the man who records faster than his shadow" a multitracked version of Terry Riley"s toolkit of minimalism, recorded over just two days by Jeroen van Veen on piano and a variety of electronic keyboards. The layers were then edited and superimposed to create the particular, hypnotic quality of the piece"s development. The booklet back of this release usefully reprints the individual elements of In C. It is largely left up to the performer(s) to pull these elements together in a satisfying whole, and so each recording is different. Neither does Riley specify which instruments need be used, but the figurations ideally suit a keyboard. In its way the work is as representative of the age of avant-garde freedom as similarly open scores by Stockhausen, except that Riley works exclusively within the white notes of the piano that make up the C major scale. C major is often perceived as the most pure tonality of the diatonic system, and In C certainly passes across the listener"s consciousness like white clouds in a brilliant blue summer sky. Jeroen van Veen has won acclaim for his many Brilliant Classics recordings of minimalism, including his own music, but also the piano oeuvres of Philip Glass, Arvo Pärt and Ludovico Einaudi: a testament both to the variety of styles to be found under the minimalist umbrella but also to van Veen"s ready mastery of those styles. There are many recordings of In C, but almost none at budget price: this release is sure to receive wide critical and popular attention. Terry Riley is one of the founders of the Minimalist Movement. His most famous and ground breaking work, "In C", is based on structured interlocking repetitive patterns, creating a hypnotic, multi-layered aural sensation, which inspired many compoers and musicians after him. Pietro Antonio Locatelli was one of the most important composers of the Baroque period, being a particularly celebrated composer of violin repertoire. His collection L?arte del violino contains 12 violin concertos with 24 caprices in the first and last movement of each, allowing for astonishing displays of virtuosity.He was born in Bergamo, Italy, in 1695, and at the age of 16 went to Rome to study the violin. Despite the popular myth that he was taught by Corelli, it?s unlikely that he ever made contact with him; however, he certainly studied with members of the Corelli ?school?, improving both his compositional skills and his performing technique.Although details of the composer?s life are somewhat sketchy, it?s clear Locatelli was linked to some of the most influential aristocrats of the time. At some point he was under the protection of Monsignor Camillo Cybo, an advisor to the Pope; at another point, he was granted the title of ?virtuoso da camera? by the Habsburgian governor of Mantua Philipp von Hesse-Darmstadt. Just these fleeting details are enough to tell us of Locatelli?s growing reputation for virtuosic playing; in Munich in 1727 he was awarded 12 gold florins for a performance, and he pops up again in Germany in 1728, receiving money for services to the court in Kassel.Eventually, business-savvy Locatelli ended up in Amsterdam, where the music publishing industry had taken off. Thanks to the composer?s meticulous attention to the publication of his works, and the fact that he was legally required to give copies to the Leiden University library, we are left with excellent manuscripts of his Opp. 1?9. His business acumen must have paid off, as his estate at the time of his death comprised large collections of works of art and old books, indicating an impressive prosperity.Locatelli was the forerunner of 19th-century virtuosity, and the works on this release reveal a composer eager to exploit the sound of the violin. As well as writing technically demanding solo passages, however, he was also an inventive writer for the supporting instruments, demonstrating a superb knack for fugal writing, and intensifying the texture of the concertino group with the addition of a viola, something unusual for the time. This release is an excellent opportunity to become better acquainted with Locatelli and the wealth of music he composed throughout his life. Demonstrating the versatility of Locatelli?s writing, this set includes his Op.5 Trio Sonatas ?o due violini o due flauti? for the violin as well as the flute, allowing the listener to experience the composer?s florid writing in two very different interpretations.Igor Ruhadze and his group Ensemble Violini Capricciosi have dedicated themselves to recording Locatelli?s works for some years now. Careful research along with a genuine enthusiasm for the overlooked composer?s works have led to a fine set of recordings, previously described by Gramophone as ?brilliantly and at times breathtakingly performed?. Opis - Bedřich Smetana was a forerunner of the Nationalist music movement in 19th-century Czechoslovakia, and played a large part in developing the country"s musical identity. This disc comprises Smetana"s most renowned work, the inimitable Má vlast (My Homeland), a series of six tone poems " composed over five years " that depict different elements of the landscape of the composer"s native country. Vyšehrad, or The High Castle, is the first movement, based on the castle in Prague " the residence of early Czech kings. It opens with arpeggios played by a duo of harps, and later a military element is portrayed with the help of a march theme. The second movement Vltava (The Moldau), depicts the route of the river from the mountains to its end. Šárka, the third movement, explores the Czech folklore centred on the Bohemian Amazon maiden of the same name. This is followed by Z českých luhů a hájů (From Bohemia"s Meadows and Fields); a depiction of a beautiful landscape on a sunny day. These first four movements were intended to complete the work, but after a gap of four years Smetana composed another two: Tábor, portraying the Hussite warriors who founded and defended the city of Tábor in 1420, and Blaník, named after the mountain in central Bohemia. This, the final movement, begins with the same driving rhythms as Tábor and later relents into a joyful hymn. It is easy to see how this work paved the way for Smetana to be heralded as one of Czechoslovakia"s greatest composers and patriots. The works are performed by the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Theodore Kuchar. The cycle Má Vlast by Smetana is an ode to the composer"s motherland Bohemia, singing the praises of the lush countryside, proud and venerable cities, majestic mountains and the force of nature in the country"s most important river, the Vltava (the Moldau). Tamtejsze studio miało dokładnie taką samą konsoletę jak moje i miksowanie tam było znacznie tańsze. Pobyt również. Bez sensu było siedzieć w środku zimy w Hook End." "Płyta ma bardzo żywe brzmienie. Poprzedni album był nagrywany inaczej - graliśmy swoje partie w studio, a potem łączyliśmy poszczególne ścieżki i sekcje w komputerze. Całość stała się przez to bardzo sterylna. Tym razem nagraliśmy wszystkie instrumenty na żywo. Tak jak na scenie, pozwalaliśmy sobie na improwizowane wstawki i pomyłki." Jay Kay postanowił trzymać się kilku zasad. W trakcie kolacji pojawiło się kilka osób. Nie miałem pojęcia, kim są i nie przypadli mi do gustu. W trakcie rozmowy pojawił się temat religii. Nie jestem religijny, nigdy nie byłem, ale zawsze fascynowało mnie to, że religia dotyczy pojęć, których istnienia nie da się udowodnić. Ta rozmowa bardzo mnie zirytowała, pomyślałem sobie, że mam już dosyć. Wierzę jedynie w to, że kiedyś wielki meteor uderzy w Ziemię. Stało się to już kiedyś, więc prawdopodobnie zdarzy się to i w przyszłości." Pierwszym singlem z płyty jest taneczny "White Knuckle Ride", który powstał już kilka lat temu - "Pracowaliśmy nad nim od lat, ale tekst, a właściwie jego główna część, powstała w ciągu 20 minut." Słowa utworu dotyczą doświadczeń Jaya z przemysłem muzycznym. O podpisanym, gdy miał 22 lata, kontrakcie z Sony, mówi, że był "wyczerpujący pod każdym względem." Tym razem wszystko wydaje się być na swoim miejscu. "Jestem mądrzejszy, zarówno w kwestiach muzyki, jaki i działania przemysłu muzycznego" - mówi Kay.
